Many of us have heard about the Indian Independence Movement and how it was led by great leaders like Gandhi and Nehru. But few of know about a lesser-known revolutionary, Bhagat Singh. He is an extremely important figure in the history of India, not just for his work as a revolutionary but also for his martyrdom at a very early age. In this post we will provide the background history to the life and work of Bhagat Singh as well as share some thoughts on whether or not he should be remembered as one of those who stole from us our dream of being truly free from British rule in India. Bhagat Singh was born on 24 December 1907 in Phulpur. Phulpur is a small town in the district of the same name, near Lahore (now in Pakistan). His parents were Kishan Singh and Raj Kaur. He was the eldest of four siblings. Bhagat Singh studied at the Victoria School, Phulpur and went on to graduate from Government College, Lahore . Singhs family was simple and livelihood came from agriculture and petty trade. Singhs father had an extended family like most people of that time. Singhs mother did not really love him and Bhagat Singh had a rather difficult childhood where he was victim to many hardships while growing up. His mother would make him do great chores like cleaning toilets at an early age. Bhagat Singh was introduced to the world of politics at a very early age. His father had many friends who were involved in revolutionary activity and it is around these people that Bhagat Singh spent most of his time. He attended meetings, rallies etc., where he heard political leaders talk about their cause and he understood this early on that the aim of these men was national freedom for India. He played an active role in many campaigns like boycotting foreign cloth (the boycott of foreign cloth was introduced by Mahatma Gandhi) and burning foreign cloth on the streets etc. It was around this time that Bhagat Singh got into the habit of spending much of his time reading. It is said that he used to read anything he could get his hands on. He used to borrow books from all his friends and get them to read them to him so that he could retain what he had read. The famous Ghadar party was formed in America in 1913 by Punjabi immigrants who had settled there, mainly for the purpose of achieving independence for India from British rule. The movement spread fast among Punjabis all over the world and various branches sprouted in many different countries, including Britain. These Ghadarites brought to Britain a revolutionary spirit that was unheard of before 1913. The movement, which was also called the "Indian independence movement" was led by revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh. The Ghadar party was started to protest against the British colonial rule in India and it soon became very popular among Indians all over the country. Singhs mother knew that her son's participation in this movement would eventually get him killed by the British. She pleaded with him not to be a part of it but he had made up his mind early on that he would not stop until India was independent from British rule. On 23 April, 1923, there was a large protest rally at Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar organized by the Ghadar Party. cfa1e77820
